Our Computer Science Department receives re-accreditation from the British Computer Society (BCS)
CITY College International Faculty is pleased to announce that its Computer Science Department was re-accredited for another five years with no conditions by the British Computer Society (BCS). The accreditation holds for the undergraduate programmes (Bachelors) delivered in Thessaloniki: BSc (Hons) in Computer Science BSc (Hons) in Computer Science (Business Informatics) BSc (Hons) in Computer Science (Internet Computing) The programmes met the rigorous criteria and high standards set by the BCS. The BPS accreditation is a definite hallmark of quality of our programmes. More specifically the panel commended the Computer Science Department for: the collaboration that staff has with students while at the same time maintaining the balance and boundaries between a friendly supporting environment and professionalism the outstanding NSS scores that reflects overall student engagement the staff development process and the integration of new staff the strong links with industry the focus on people (students and staff) The BCS is the industry body for IT professionals, and a Chartered Engineering Institution for Information Technology. The first (BCS) visit to CITY College was carried out in 2004 when the Computer Science received the first BCS accreditation. Graduates of the undergraduate programmes of our Computer Science Department may become members of the BCS. CITY College warmly congratulates the staff of the Computer Science Department on their hard work and commitment clearly confirmed by the BCS re-accreditation.

Celebrating women in Computing: Our Computer Science students at the ACM womENcourage 2019 Conference in Rome
A group of students represented the Computer Science Department of CITY College at the ACM womENcourage 2019 Conference joining ACM in celebrating Women in Computing. Themed “Diversity Drives Societal Change” the event took place in Rome, 16-18 September bringing together women in the computing profession and related technical fields to exchange knowledge and experience. The CITY College team was formed by a 3rd level student, Zoi Gaci, a postgraduate student, Rina Basholi, a PhD candidate, Adelina Basholi, and our alumna Alexandra Cristina Patrascu. Accompanied by Dr George Eleftherakis, Associate Professor at our Computer Science Department and Director of the PhD Programme of SEERC, our student delegates participated in different ways in the event and gained invaluable experience! Congratulations also go to SEERC’s PhD student Adelina Basholli whose poster made it to the top 25 out of 140 posters submitted in the conference! ACM-W Muses - the student club of CITY College dedicated to supporting and inspiring women in computing - also joined the event as volunteers, participants, and presenters! Well done Adelina, Rina, Zoi, and Alexandra! Our Computer Science Department participates every year in the womENcourage Conference since the first one that took place in 2014. The Department aims at inspiring women in computing and combating the misconception that Computer Science is a field mostly addressing to men. About womENcourage womENcourage is an annual (since 2014) Celebration of Women in Computing organized by ACM and ACM-W Europe. It brings together women in the computing profession and related technical fields to exchange knowledge and experience and provide special support for women who are pursuing their academic degrees and starting their careers in computing, through a programme packed with insightful topics and engaging educational and networking activities. womENcourage provides a unique experience of the collective energy, drive, and excellence that professional women share to support each other.

Flexible delivery mode: Weekend Masters Opportunities for professional experience during studies through the department’s industrial partners Ideal for candidates coming from disciplines other than Computer Science The Computer Science Department of CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield is happy to announce the launch of a series of new Masters programmes aiming at better responding to the current needs of the industry. All postgraduate programmes will be taught over weekends, in the English language, starting the upcoming academic year, in October 2019. New programmes are listed below: MSc in Web and Mobile Development MSc in Software Development MSc in Software Development with Industry Placement PG Certificate in Front-End Development (1 semester) PG Certificate in Mobile Development (1 semester) The Computer Science Department introduces the MSc in Web and Mobile Development for applicants who wish to gain specialised knowledge and skills to prepare for a career in the highly demanded market areas of Web and Mobile development. The MSc in Software Development and the MSc in Software Development with Industry Placement programmes are ideal for graduates from other than Computer Science disciplines who want to change their career path and may come from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. The programme provides students with a wide understanding of Computer Science and of core computing skills and prepares graduates for rewarding and challenging careers in the computing industry and technology related fields. Also the Industry placement offers opportunities to students to gain professional experience with the industrial partners of the Computer Science Department while studying. The newly introduced PG Certificates have been designed to offer specialisation in contemporary technologies of Front-end or Mobile Development in only 1 semester of studies. Eligible applicants are expected to hold an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related degree. Dr Dimopoulos nominated for SURE Supervisor of the Year 2018 Award by the University of Sheffield
Congratulations to Dr Kostas Dimopoulos, Senior Lecturer at our Computer Science Department who has been nominated for SURE Supervisor of the Year 2018 Award! The student-researcher who nominated Dr Dimopoulos stated the following: My supervisor has constantly motivated, inspired and challenged me to carry out this research to the best of my abilities. He has always been there for me whenever I encountered a problem and was very willing to help me overcome those obstacles. He has been a constant motivation and has helped me realize my own potential in this research area. He was constantly focused and committed to the project and was always highly interested to know the problems as well as what I had managed to accomplish in every stage of the project. His expertise, previous experience as well as the constant support and enthusiasm have made this project possible and have motivated me to pursue a research degree in the future. The ‘SURE Academic Supervisor of the Year Award’ rewards academics who have been available and supportive to their SURE student researcher and actively helped him/her to develop both personal and academic skills. The awards comes in recognition of the supervisor’s generosity with their research knowledge and willingness to help, communicate regularly with the student, readily answering questions. Committed to research, the academic staff at the International Faculty CITY College encourages students to get involved in research, and participate in the University of Sheffield SURE Scheme, providing support and guidance along the way. In many cases in the past students from the International Faculty have participated in the SURE Scheme with research projects and won awards.

Engaging women in computer science; Our CS students participate in the Hackathon ‘Challenge the Force within Her’
Our Computer Science students, Rina Basholli, student in the MSc in Advanced Software Engineering programme and Rrona Dushi, 3rd level student in the BSc (Hons) in Computer Science programme participated in the Hackathon Challenge that took place in Athens. Themed ‘Challenge the Force within Her’ the Hackathon was addressed only to women involved in the fields of IT, computing and communication and aimed at enhancing women power and gender diversity. The International Faculty CITY College encourages and supports women participation in IT and computing. Plus, it encourages all its students to participate in competitions and events outside the classroom to help them gain a rich student experience and invaluable employability skills.

Robotics Club - Our students experiment with Arduinos
The Robotics club recently received the first Arduino kits and our students have already started experimenting with the equipment. Students from mainly the Computer Science Department, but also from the other departments of the College will build robots from recyclable materials and Arduinos (mini controllers used for building automating projects with simple electronics). The use of Arduinos will help educate students' about computer programming skills while at the same time provide them with valuable hands-on experience. Student-members of the Robotics Club are more than excited to engage with Arduino activities.

New Masters programme in Advanced Software Engineering with specialisation in Data Analytics
The Computer Science Department of the University of Sheffield International Faculty CITY College is happy to announce the launch of a new programme recently added in its portfolio, the MSc in Advanced Software Engineering (Data Analytics). This new specialisation is offered in response to the strong demand for expert knowledge in this field of Software Engineering. Due to the vast amount of business data being collected by organisations today, there is an increasing demand for specialists in data analytics, business intelligence and big data. Analysis of data can identify trends, patterns, and customer behaviour and reveal important information in order to support intelligent decision making and provide a competitive advantage in the modern globalised market. Big data introduces new challenges in the field of data analysis. This postgraduate course offers students advanced knowledge in software engineering and data analytics. Using a variety of teaching and assessment methods, it aims to produce students with the skills that are necessary to work as respected professionals in an industrial environment. The new programme is addressed to candidates who hold an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline. The programme will be taught in English and will be offered both in full-time and part-time mode, starting the academic in October 2018. Ms Sotiriadou delivers speech in Google - Women Techmakers Summit 2018
Ms Anna Sotiriadou, Head of the Computer Science Department at the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, participated as invited speaker in the 'Women Techmakers Greece | Building a New Horizon' event that took place in Thessaloniki, 19 March 2018. Ms Sotiriadou, joined 80 inspirational women speakers from the fields of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship who talked to encourage the next generation of women to choose a technology career, learn about new opportunities and get inspired. This was the second year for Ms Sotiriadou to join the Google Techmakers Summit as speaker. Mr Vassilis Tsoulis, Director of the Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre also participated in the event, representing the International Faculty CITY College, and coordinated the panel on Inclusion and Diversity together with representatives from Randstad, GDG, SAP and Google.
