Online Guest Lecture on 'Effective event sponsorship in music festivals' by Mr. Victor Teiosanu
What makes an effective event sponsorship in music festivals? An expert reveals! Mr. Victor Teiosanu, Premium Brands Director at Ursus Breweries that sponsors one of Europe's best music festivals, the Untold Festival, presented online to our master students of the unit Festivals and Events Management taught by Dr. Ana Cruz, the company's strategy, practices, and insights. The webinar was very informative and as a student commented: "it gave me the inside of stories that I knew only from a consumer's perspective". Thank you Mr. Teiosanu for taking the time to share your knowledge and expertise with our Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations master students! We cherish it!

Guest Lecture on ‘The Economics of Happiness’ by Mr. Francis Munier from the University of Strasbourg
A very interesting guest lecture took place on the topic ‘The Economics of Happiness’ by Mr. Francis Munier, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Management of the University of Strasburg, at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The lecture was addressed to Bachelors and Masters students attending economics-related programmes (i.e. BA Hons in Business Studies – Accounting and Finance, MSc in Finance and Risk Management and MSc in Finance and Banking). In his very interesting lecture Mr. Munier explored the Progress Paradox and attempted to explain why capitalism and liberal democracy, both of which justify themselves on the grounds that they produce the greatest happiness for the greatest number, leave so much dissatisfaction. The speaker went on to discuss different factors contribute to happiness and wel-being, like wealth marriage, parenthood, job satisfaction, health, leisure time, unemployment. Finally, Mr. Munier discussed with our students the possibility to find a correlation between happiness and GDP at individual and national levels. Participating students found Mr. Munier’s lecture particularly interesting and engaging.

Company visit at the Black Sea Trade & Development Bank for our business students
A very insightful company visit to the Black Sea Trade & Development Bank was organised for our postgraduate business students by our Career, Employability & Enterprise Centre on 4 December 2019, giving our students the opportunity to get first hand information from a very important international financial institution based in Thessaloniki. Three members from the bank’s management team - namely Mr. Michalis Spanopoulos, General Counsel, Mr George Pahinis, Director Risk Management and Mr Stylianos Sousamoglou, Principal Officer, Treasury – welcomed the students, gave them a site tour and provided invaluable insight on Risk Management and Treasury. The visit took place in the context of the unit ‘Investments and Security Analysis’. Mr Konstantinos Skoutelis, Lecturer at the MSc in Finance and Banking programme accompanied the students at the company visits. About the Black Sea Trade & Development Bank The Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB), an international financial institution with headquarters in Thessaloniki, Greece, was established by Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The Bank supports economic development and regional cooperation in the Black Sea Region through trade and project finance lending, guarantees, and equity participation in private enterprises and public entities in the member countries.

Competition with real-life IT projects for luxury hotels of Thessaloniki by our business students
Pecha Kucha presentations of creative posters by our second year business students who participated in the competition Judging panel comprised of managers of two luxury hotels in Thessaloniki Building employability skills while putting theory into practice Connecting students to industry For the fourth year in a row our business students presented real-life projects for two luxury hotels of Thessaloniki -the Lazart Hotel (5*) and the Caravan Hotel (3*) – in the context of a presentation Competition that took place at our main campus in Thessaloniki. The competition was organised by Dr Andrew Salisbury, leader of the unit ‘Decision making with IT’. According to the brief of the project, students were asked to design a presentation, using the latest IT technology and provide cutting-edge information systems to enhance an already existing system or create a new one. Students were divided into 14 groups and worked systematically towards the completion of the project. The judges, Ms Anastasia Kartsoni, Sales & Banquet Manager at Lazart Hotel and Mr. Alexandros Karapatoglou, Co-founder of the The Caravan Bed & Breakfast, were impressed by our students’ creativity, ideas and professional approach. Hotel managers were not only asked to judge the best pitched presentations but to give feedback based on their own experience, enabling students to get first-hand knowledge of hotel operations inside and out. The winning teams of the competition are as follows: Winning teams Andreou Galateia, Trikou Niki, Zachariadou Stavria Kokkalis Dimitris, Sreten Iliev, Maslovarikj Jovan Lykaki Aria,Maria eleni Giareni Runner-up teams Vazakas Pantelis, Chalaitsidis Theodoros Dabovic Iva, Synodias Konstantinos The winning teams were offered a private company visit - tour at Lazart & Caravan while the runner-up teams will enjoy a breakfast at the hotels. All students received certificates for their work. Activities like the poster competition are organised frequently within programme curriculums at CITY College aiming at building our students employability skills by offering them the opportunity to work for real clients on real-life case studies, move from theory to practice, as well as bring them closer to the industry. The event was supported by the Career, Employability & Enterprise Centre of CITY College in its efforts to support the academic departments' activities aiming to bring students closer to the industry. Students gained valuable industry insights from one of the leading companies in its decoration and furniture! The company was established in 1985 and has dynamic growth in Greece and all over the world since.

Chick-fil-A back to CITY College for a Successful Seminar on Effective Social media
Management team from the second largest quick service chicken restaurant chain in the United States shares insights On 11th November 2019 CITY College were happy to welcome one more time at our main campus in Thessaloniki a team from Chick-fil-A who delivered a particularly successful seminar on 'Providing Effective Customer Service through Social Media'. The seminar traditionally drew a full house like all previews Chick-fil-A events. It’s worth mentioning that this was the eighth time for CITY College to host the Chick-fil-A business seminar. Invited speakers shared with the audience valuable insights giving a taste of the latest trends in social media and effective social media marketing practices. During their presentation they discussed Chick-fil-A's strategy and objectives, as well as the way the company manages attacks and criticism by competitors or dissatisfied customers. The event concluded with questions from participants that generated fruitful discussion. Chick-fil-A is the second largest quick service chicken restaurant chain in the United States, with more than 2,300 locations in 38 US States and annual sales of more than US$10.5 billion. The seminar was organised by the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) and the Career, Enterprise and Employability Centre of CITY College and is in line with our mission to bring academia closer to the industry. The event was supported by the Interbalkan Institute for Educational and Economic Development (IIEED) and the NGO, Youth Entrepreneurship Education Technology (YET). About Chick-fil-A Chick-fil-A is an American fast food restaurant chain headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of College Park, Georgia, specializing in chicken sandwiches. Founded in May 1946, it has more than 2,000 restaurants, mainly in the southeastern United States. The company's culture is influenced by its founder Truett Cathy's Southern Baptist beliefs; all Chick-fil-A restaurants are closed for business on Sunday as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2010 Chick-fil-A took the industry lead in average sales per restaurant, making an average of $2.7 million per restaurant (McDonald's was second with $2.4 million per restaurant). It also features in many top 10 US brand lists.

Seminar on Microfinance by AFI - Action Finance Initiative
Final year undergraduate business students had the opportunity to attend a seminar on Microfinance delivered by Mr. Pavlos Antonoglou, Microfinance Development Officer at AFI - Action Finance Initiative. The event titled ‘Microfinance: Empowering Microentrepreneurs, Theory (a bit) and Practice’ took place on 8th November 2019 within the context of the "Entrepreneurs & Small Business” and was attended by final year business students. During the seminar students were introduced to microfinancing for microentrepreneurs. Mr. Antonoglou presented AFI and the way in which the company provides financial services to entrepreneurs helping them set a solid foundation for future success. Our students had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with how microfinance works in practice and ask practical questions. The seminar was organised by the Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre.

Dr Solomon participates in XVII Triple Helix Conference of Triple Helix Association in Cape Town, South Africa
Dr Adrian Solomon, Lecturer at the Business Administration & Economics Department of CITY College participated in the XVII Triple Helix Conference 2019 of Triple Helix Association in Cape Town, South Africa, 9-11 September 2019. His participation involved a presentation on the first day and the delivery of a training session on the second day. During the conference, entitled ‘A Catalyst for Change’, Dr Solomon together with Ms Ilina Atanasovska, graduate of our Business Administration & Economics Department and PhD candidate at our research centre, SEERC, delivered an informative presentation focusing on the key message that society needs a voice in any type of innovation. Their presentation highlighted the research impact of the THA Chapter of Greece hosted by the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC), in terms of producing market and society-oriented research, products & services. The presentation underpinned SEERC’s role within our society, since over the years it has contributed to the resilience strategy of Thessaloniki through multi-stakeholder co-creation while also helping industry to grow, boosting the entrepreneurial ecosystem and engaging our society into research. The session included a short presentation of the responsible innovation RRI experiment methodology by the FIT4RRI project through which institutions can learn how to embed RRI into their core operations. On the second day of the conference Dr Solomon co-delivered a training with Dr. Christiane Gebhardt on the pathways to develop entrepreneurial universities mentioning that the local culture ecosystem motivation and values are key shapers of such a process. More to follow on the 2019 European Triple Helix Congress on Responsible Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Thessaloniki (ETHAC2019), coming up 30 September – 1st October 2019.

Dr Petros Golitsis honoured with International Award of Poetry by the Writers' Union of Serbia
Dr Petros Golitsis, Lecturer at the Business Administration & Economics Department of CITY College has been invited to receive the International Prize for Poetry "Povelja Morave" (Moravian Charter) by the Association of Serbian Writers. Dr Golitsis will receive the award in a special ceremony during the International Meeting of Writers that will take place in Beograd 19-23 September 2019. The International Prize is accompanied by the publication of a separate bilingual edition of his poems in Greek and Serbian, translated by Marija Puslojić. Dr. Golitsis is the author of four volumes of verse, Paper’s memory (2009), The abrading of time (2013), The flesh of the temporary (2015) and Bursting with meat (2017), and of six volumes of essays on modern and contemporary poetry. His poems are included in various anthologies and journals, and have been published in English, German, Italian, Spanish, Finnish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Portuguese and in Turkey. Since 2009 he has been a prolific columnist for various periodicals and newspapers, including “EfSyn”, “Eneken” and “Intellectum”; part of the editing team of “Thraca” and “Erato” (Revista Internacional de Poesía y Poética); a foundation member of the Cultural Foundation “Hyrdia”, and an editorial director of the publishing house “Romi Press” in Thessaloniki. He has been awarded the “Tudor Arghezi” International Award for his poetry (2018) and he has collaborated with the Swiss composer Jonas Kocher (2016) on his poetic composition The flesh of the temporary. CITY College congratulates Dr Golitsis on receiving another international award for his poetry and is proud to have a multi-talented academic among faculty members. Last year Dr Golitsis was honoured with another international award for his poetry, the International Award for Poetry ‘Tudor Arghezi’ by the Poetry Subsidiary of the Writers’ Union of Romania.
