Real-life IT project connecting our business students to industry for luxury hotels of Thessaloniki
A creative Poster Exhibition and Competition by our students Building employability skills while putting theory into practice Connecting students to industry For the third year in a row course leader Dr Andrew Salisbury organised a Poster Exhibition and Competition, which took place at our main campus in Thessaloniki. This year a new project was provided with business students delivering real-life projects for three luxury hotels in Thessaloniki: two five-star hotels, The MET and Lazart Hotel, and one family run 3 star called the Caravan Hotel. Students were asked to design a poster, using the latest IT technology, creating a 5 star hotel – providing both cutting-edge information systems together with a SWOT analysis based on the hotel’s location. Ideas were innovative and creative including tech like Google Home, Smart mirrors and automatic sensing devices using the cloud from the room itself. A selection of students had the opportunity to show the managers around the exhibition, whilst eliciting practical information on the day in the life of a hotel manager. The posters were displayed in the auditorium for a week allowing other students and staff to see them, the managers were not only asked to judge the best poster but to give feedback based on their own experience, which was portrayed later to students. The judges were impressed by our students’ creativity, ideas and professional approach. Competition winners received their certificates and awards by Dr Andrew Salisbury and Mr Vassilis Tsoulis, Director of Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre. In addition to certificates winners were also offered a VIP privé visit to the hotels to have first-hand experience of a luxury hotel’s operations and management. The prizes were given to: First prize winners: POSTER “LAVIDIN” - Stagkogianni Athina (middle), Nicoleta Athanasopoulou (middle right) and Smaro Papadopoulou (middle left), Dr Salisbury (on the left) and Mr Tsoulis (on the right). Second prize winner: POSTER “MY PLACE” - Alexandros Andreanidis (shown) and Apostolos Charalampidis. Third prize winner: POSTER “THEXENIA” - Jeta Zhaveli (shown) and Maria Filipidou. Activities like the poster competition are organised frequently within the International Faculty’s programme curriculums aiming at building our students employability skills by offering them the opportunity to work for real-clients on real-life case studies, put theory into practice, as well as bridge the gap between academia and the industry. Special Thanks: Special thanks to Mr Vassilis Tsoulis, Director of the International Faculty’s Career, Employability & Enterprise Centre, Mrs Clio Antoniou, Reservations Manager, The Met Hotel (judge 1), Mr Karapatoglou Alexandros, CEO, The Caravan (judge 2) and Mrs Anastasia Kartsoni, Sales & Banquet Manager, Lazart Hotel (judge 3).
