A successful Hotel and Hospitality Conference at the International Faculty
More than 100 participants gathered to attend a rather successful conference on ‘Hotel and Hospitality Management’ organised by CITY College, International Faculty of the University of Sheffield in Thessaloniki. The one-day conference took place on Friday, 10 March 2017at the Auditorium of CITY College and was organized by the Business Administration & Economics Department. Entitled ‘Challenges and opportunities in the Tourism Sector: The road ahead’ the event aimed at addressing issues and facilitating views exchange concerning future prospects of Tourism in Greece. Dr Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Dept. and Mr. Vassilis Tsoulis, Director of the Career Enterprise and Employability Centre opened the event by welcoming all guests. Divided in two panels – a. From city hotels to new BNB concepts and b. New age concepts & services – the conference featured a series of successful and unique cases of products or services within the sector of Tourism. Invited speakers were: Mr. Alexandros Karapatoglou, Owner, The Caravan Ms. Chrysa Faki, Marketing Manager, Polis Apartments Ms Lialina Natalia, Owner, Urban Donkey Mr Panos Remoundos, Representative of Easybnb in Thessaloniki Ms Maria Tryfinopoulou and Ms Nikolina Manoli, Owners, Dot2Dot and Ms Tania Vlahomitrou, Owner, In the loop All guest speakers presented the company they represented, their vision and strategy agreeing that, despite all difficulties, there is room for fresh ideas and new entrepreneurs within the Tourism sector, noting that there is development and growth potential within the hospitality industry. The conference brought together many professionals and entrepreneurs as well as university students who were particularly interested in the insightful presentations and the discussion generated at the closing Q&A session. An insightful seminar on Gamification by Mr Liassidis in Kyiv
On 2 February, Chris Liassides, Director of the postgraduate programmes of the Business and Economics Department at the International Faculty, CITY College, delivered an insightful seminar on Gamification in Kyiv in cooperation with the International Faculty’s educational partner in Kyiv, the European Business Association (EBA). In his presentation, entitled ‘Gamification: Engaging Employees and Customers’ Mr Liassides explained how gamification is used by brands to motivate employees, create healthy competition among teams, generate buzz or social proof, and encourage customer loyalty, among other benefits. The speaker suggested that with a variety of techniques – some easy to implement, some requiring advanced planning, coding, or technical expertise – any business can use gamification to get better results, no matter what the goals. The event attracted managers and entrepreneurs who had the opportunity to become acquainted with the concept of gamification and found Mr. Liassides' presentation particularly inspiring.

Poster Exhibition and Competition on IT by our Business students
A remarkable Poster Exhibition themed ‘Information Technology (IT)” took place at our main campus on 18-19th January in Thessaloniki, where 2nd level business students had the opportunity to participate in the competition and showcase a creative series of posters on a range of IT-related topics. The exhibition was organized in the frame of the unit "Decision Making with Technology’ led by Dr Andrew Salisbury. The posters were displayed in the Auditorium on the 5th floor, and many students and staff took the opportunity to visit the exhibition and admire our students’ work. Dr Salisbury commented “In modern times, it is imperative that students are given the opportunity to communicate their work with industry, so an event like this benefits them two-fold, that is innovation though expression (poster presentation) and connection with their future workplace. I hope that this event brings about initiatives enabling students’ assignments to be inextricably linked with industry bringing both parties involved even closer. Special thanks to my friend Mr Vassilis Tsoulis (Director of Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre) who made all this possible.” On the last day of the exhibition two leading IT companies (IP.gr - IP Digital & StoneWave) were invited to judge the posters based on their own unique professional experience and the competition winners were chosen. Overall company representatives were impressed by our students’ posters, their creativity, ideas and professional approach. They gave students valuable feedback and an essential guide to today’s industry requirements. Dr Nikolaidis at the 4th Networking event of the TEI Marketing Club
Dr Dimitris Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department of the International Faculty, CITY College delivered an interesting presentation at 4th Networking event of the TEI Marketing Club that took place 19 December in Thessaloniki. The event, entitled 'WELLNESS – A human-focused approach', touched upon this new trend in the world of business. During his speech Dr Nikolaidis presented a research on job satisfaction that actually proves that human resources and employees actually play an important role in the substantial developments, changes and sustainability within a company or organization. Within this context he emphasised howimportant it is for employees to feel that a working environment nourishes respect, trust, responsiveness and care in order for them to continuously cultivate skills, be loyal to the company and increase their productivity. The event was followed by a networking cocktail. Dr. Nikolaidis is also a member of the Board of the Marketing Club, significantly contributing to the Club’s activities.

Study visit by our business students at IP.GR and IP Digital
An educational visit took place for our business students on 6 December 2016, at the premises IT companies, namely IP.GR and IP Digital. The visit aimed at familiarising students with the software development, programming process and database management in a real working environment. IP.GR and IP Digital are based in Thessaloniki and are leading companies in the Internet services industry, domain registration, and the development and implementation of customised internet marketing strategies. Ms. Chrysa Faki, Marketing & PR Manager of the company gave the students a site tour and talked to them about the company and its achievements. Students had the opportunity to discuss with Mr Giannis Tsitziras, Web and Graphic Designer and Mr Konstantinos Ramas, Marketing and Sales Coordinator, who at the same time are graduates of the International Faculty, CITY College, having completed undergraduate and graduate programmes respectively. Mr. Andrew Salisbury, Lecturer at our Business Department accompanied students at the visit. During the two-hour visit, the students were given the opportunity to learn about services provided by the companies, their operational strategy as well as how business graduates can join companies of the IT sector. In the discussion that followed the briefing of students from the managers of the two companies, the students had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a broader discussion on the sector of IT services in which IP.GR and IP Digital specialise, as well as discuss future trends and prospects. Students attended with great interest the presentation which was intended to enhance their professional skills, to give them insights from a real-life working environment and give them the opportunity to learn from the knowledge and experiences of executives. IP business representatives are already planning the next study visit for our students. Company visits like this are organised throughout the academic year for all our students aiming at bringing academic closer to the industry and give students the opportunity to see can theory is put into practice in a working setting.

Real-time debate by first-year business students
First year business students worked in teams and presented their work to their classmates following the structure of a real time debate with strict time limits! Each group of students had to argue in favor or against various challenging issues such as whether Multinationals do more harm than good, whether there should be a minimum wage in companies, and whether companies should look at prospective employees’ social media profiles. All students really engaged to the process of debates, prepared well and argued strongly to support their points of view. The student audience participated in the Q&A session that followed the debates and lively discussions emerged.

Company visit at Koukakis Farm by our postgraduate business students
Our postgraduate students in Management visited the Koukakis Farm, a competitive fast growing business in the sector of dairy products, located in Kato Apostoloi, Kilkis, approximately 50km away from Thessaloniki. The Production Manager of the company, Mr. Mpikos, welcomed the group students and offered a two and a half hour tour at the manufacturing. Mr. Mpikos touched upon the company vision, production, operations, quality assurance, competitive advantage, distribution, supply chain and marketing activities. Our students were given a site tour giving them the opportunity to get valuable insights on the company’s operations, and production line. They also visited the Koukakis farm. During the visit our business students also met the Managing Director of the company, Mr Koukakis. An open ended discussion took place between our students and the representatives of the company together with the product testing. The Koukakis factory, together with the production and administration offices are based in Kilkis, however the distribution along with its commercial department is located in Thessaloniki. The company produces a high range of dairy products and it employs fifty employees, working on a three shift daily basis. The company exports its products in many countries each year and since 2011 a strategic agreement was reached with the distributor of dairy products in Italy. The company visit took place in the context of the Operations and Process Management module of the MSc in Management with the presence of Mr. Lefteris Papadopoulos and Mr. Tsoulis, Director of our Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre. Real life cases and learning outside the classroom is a crucial part to boost student knowledge.

Workshop by FEAST on Crowdfunding
An interesting workshop on crowdfunding was presented by FEAST (Fundraising Entrepreneurship and the Arts with Sustainable Tactics) to business students of the International Faculty, CITY College on Friday, 2 December 2016. Our alumna, Ms. Argyro Barata, FEAST Co-Founder, gave a presentation on Crowdfunding, its history, contemporary usage and specific examples, case studies of Crowdfunding platforms and projects, startups that where initiated through it. She also spoke about FEAST, an offline crowdfunding platform, its targets and activities. The workshop also included an activity where, our 3rd level students were asked to work in teams on a crowdfunding campaign during the workshop of the event. FEAST is to establish a new way of funding creative projects and innovative business plans, by activating the local community. Crowdfunding is today an important funding tool for projects, especially those focusing on the arts, culture and social entrepreneurship. The event was organised by our Career, Employability and Enterprise Centre and was part of the unit “Entrepreneurship & Small Business”.
