Entrepreneurship unit at the Managers Academy in Skopje
On the weekend of 11-13 December 2015, Mr. Andreas Baresel – Bofinger, Lecturer at the Business Administration and Economics Department, delivered a unit on entrepreneurship at the Managers Academy in Skopje. Entitled ‘Entrepreneurship: Successfully Launching and Managing New Ventures’ the unit was delivered at the TCC Grand Plaza Hotel as part of the Strategic Management track of the postgraduate programme . The unit was attended by regular postgraduate students of Managers Academy from the Strategic Management track and by 13 scholars from the Ministry of Education and Science. The Managers’ Academy is established under the academic authority of the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, in collaboration with the Macedonian Chambers of Commerce and supported by the Macedonian Ministry of Education and Science. The core mission of the Managers Academy is vocational training and qualifications attainment, including numerous complementary services that will benefit its members and advance their professional skills and status.

‘Digital marketing’ MOOC course shortlisted for award
The Digital and Social Media Marketing MOOC online open course that was launched in September 2015, run successfully, as part of the international academic collaboration of 5 European universities (JEMSS project) – the International Faculty, CITY College among them and the University of Salford as lead partner – has been shortlisted by the Northern Digital Awards 2016. This nomination came as recognition of the successful student recruitment to the course in the category of “Digital Marketing Campaign – Third Sector”. The course attracted more than 3.000 student sign-ups. These students had the opportunity to participate in the MOOC or proceed to the next stage and get a certificate for completing the exam questions, which ran alongside the basic MOOC. The programme was addressed to organisations who want to establish and improve their digital and social media marketing presence and individuals interested in digital and social media marketing. It equipped participants with knowledge of the latest digital and social media marketing techniques, tools and channels. With real case studies from businesses across Europe, participants had the opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, whilst navigating the complexities of local market places. The MOOC development is part of a European Founded project (JEMSS) that aims to develop a Joint Masters in Digital and Social Media Marketing. The MOOC and the JEMSS project complement the already strong portfolio of masters provided by the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College. These include among others the MA in Digital Marketing and Social Media delivered in Thessaloniki and Bulgaria. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. The International Industrial Advisory Board Annual Meeting
Bringing academia even closer to the industry. On Monday, 14 December 2015 the International Industrial Advisory Board of the Business Administration and Economics Department held its annual meeting at the main campus of the International Faculty in Thessaloniki, Greece. The Board which consists of 16 members, all well respected experts in the business world, meets in a plenary session once every year. Many interesting and challenging topics were on the agenda and discussed thoroughly at the Board meeting. This year the meeting’s agenda particularly focused on latest trends and developments in the business world, aiming at identifying future trends and incorporating them in our academic programmes. Proposals on enhancing even more our learning and teaching, by taking under consideration the market changes and the current and future needs of the corporate world were put on the table along with identification of the attributes and personal characteristics, soft and hard skills necessary for a successful career. Mr Athanasios Savvakis, Chair of the IAB and President of Federation of Industries for Northern Greece commented: “It was a very productive meeting with many innovative ideas. All members felt that their contribution towards enhancing the academic programmes of the Business Administration Department was appreciated and that it significantly helps the Department to continue offering high quality education.” The Industrial Advisory Board of the Business Administration and Economics Department at the International Faculty, CITY College aims to facilitate communication and collaboration with the industry in the Balkan area, in order to meet the objective of developing high calibre graduates, well-equipped to pursue successful careers. Each member of the Advisory Board contributes a valuable professional perspective from years of hands-on market experience. Thus, the Industrial Advisory Board enables the International Faculty, CITY College to keep abreast of regional and global trends and incorporate them in its mission and practices. The feedback that the Faculty receives from scientific societies, quality assurance agencies and students on educational, professional and research issues, is well-complemented by the valuable insight and guidance provided by the Industrial Advisory Board.

Dr Pavlos Gkasis at the 4th Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs
Dr Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer in Economics at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) chaired a panel on “Greece and the Eurozone” at the 4th Thessaloniki International Symposium in World Affairs. The Symposium took place in Thessaloniki on Sunday 18 October, 2015 and it was the second year that it was co-organized by SEERC the South-East European Research Centre of the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield along with Navarino Network, the Cultural Society of Entrepreneurs of Northern Greece, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, NATO, and the American College of Thessaloniki. Dr Gkasis in round table discussion on the Role of Democracy in a Social Market Economy
Dr Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer in Economics at the Business Administration and Economics Department (BAED) participated in a round table discussion on the role of democracy and the social market economy. The discussion was co-organized by the South East European Research Centre (SEERC) and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Greece on Monday 23 November, 2015. Professor Thomas Apolte, Professor for Political Economy at the University of Münster, and Dr. Pavlos Gkasis, Lecturer in Economics at the South-East European Research Centre (SEERC) presented their view and research on how political and economic freedom can help or hinder democracy. Professor Apolte, focused on the role of democracy in the social market economy while Dr. Gkasis on the role of democracy in the contemporary global economy. The event was very successful and included a vibrant discussion with the audience. On Tuesday 24 November Dr. Gkasis gave an interview at Praktoreio 104,9 radio station discussing the event and the recent developments in the region. More about the event.

Company visit to Epsilon Net by students of the Business Department
A group of 2nd Level undergraduate students from the Business Administration and Economics Department had an eye-opening experience when visiting the headquarters of Epsilon Net in Pylaia, Thessaloniki on Tuesday 1 December. Mr. Dimitris Petkousis, HR & Internal Communications Manager, and Mr. Miltos Vafiadis, Chief HRM Analyst, richly illustrated the operations of a leading software and online applications company in Greece. Since the visit took place within the Organisational Behaviour unit, students were exposed to a real success story in Greek cutting-edge entrepreneurship and were able to realise first hand how important it is for a company with an innovative corporate culture to achieve high levels of interaction and communication among its structures which positively reflect on productivity, staff engagement, sales and brand awareness. In fact, it is no coincidence that Epsilon Net has received a Best Workplace Award in Greece for 2015 and has succeeded great growth rates even in the current times of crisis.

Dr Dimitriadis meets with the East Kazakhstan State University in Kamenogorsk, KZ
Dr Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Senior Lecturer at our Business Studies Department, was invited to deliver a marketing lecture to students of the East Kazakhstan State University, within the framework of an EU-funded project for ‘Knowledge Transfer and Best Practices Sharing’. During his visit Dr Dimitriadis visited the city of Ust Kamenogorsk and was shown around the Museum of Education of East Kazakhstan. Dr Dimitriadis said: “I am happy to have been given this opportunity to deliver a lecture and meet bright students from the country while at the same time enjoy the amazing hospitality of the staff of the East Kazakhstan State University.”

Postgraduate students visit Bansko
Students attending the postgraduate course “Strategic Marketing” participated in a trip to Bansko on November 14,15 visiting hotel Premier Luxury Mountain Resort, a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, located at the foothill of the Pirin Mountain. This visit was organized in the context of the course project, which is the development of a Marketing Plan for Premier Luxury Mountain Resort for the period 2015-2016. In this project students will address the problems managers face in marketing planning, develop an in depth understanding of the factors that influence marketing strategy and apply the tools that are available to marketing managers for successfully developing a marketing plan. This project has the characteristics of junior consulting. Upon completion of the marketing plans the best three groups will have an opportunity to present their work to the company’s management at an event that will take place at our premises in Leontos Sofou, with the best team getting an award.
