Δεν χρειάζεται να είναι έτσι όμως! Σε αυτή την εκδήλωση επαγγελματίες διαφόρων επιστημονικών ειδικοτήτων και άτομα που έχουν βιώσει αυτήν την εμπειρία δίνουν μια άλλη οπτική. Οι ομιλητές θα αναφερθούν στους τρόπους διαχείρισης της διάγνωσης καρκίνου του μαστού αλλά και στους τρόπους που μπορεί κάποιος να βοηθήσει στον αγώνα πρόληψης της νόσου. Η εκδήλωση δεν θα ήταν ολοκληρωμένη εάν δεν έδινε βήμα σε επιβιώσασα αλλά και στους "σημαντικούς άλλους" που την περιέβαλαν τη στιγμή της διάγνωσης, κατά τη διάρκεια της θεραπείας και πέραν αυτής. Dr Kalliopi Megari speaks at the 31st Pan-Hellenic Congress of Psychiatry
Dr Kalliopi Megari, Lecturer and Programme Lead of the postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology at our Psychology Department, joined distinguished speakers in the 31st Pan-Hellenic Congress of Psychiatry that took place in Rhodes. Dr Megari successfully presented the topic ‘Neuropsychological and neurocognitive rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients’ and shared valuable insights with the audience. Successful event on ADHD by CITY College and the Municipality of Thessaloniki
A full house event at Thessaloniki’s City Hall well-attended by parents, educators and general public interested in learning more about ADHD Particularly interesting presentations on ADHD and neurofeedback therapy by Dr Manousos Klados and Dr Lito Eleni Michalopoulou A live neurofeedback workshop led by Dr Klados and Mr. Stergiadis A very successful event on Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was organised by CITY College, University of York Europe Campus and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, drawing a full house at Thessaloniki’s City Hall on 15 March 2023. The event featured distinguished speakers from the academic field of Psychology – namely Dr Manousos Klados, Associate Professor in Psychology and Director of MSc/MA in Cognitive/Clinical Neuropsychology of the Department of Psychology of CITY College, Dr Lito Eleni Michalopoulou, Assistant Professor at the Department of Developmental and School Psychology of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Mr Christos Stergiadis, PhD student in Applied Neuroscience at the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology of the University of York - who have done significant research in ADHD and shared useful insights with the audience. The event was split into three interdependent parts. In the beginning, Dr. Michalopoulou made an introduction to ADHD explaining the main symptomatology of the two most common types of the disorder (Inattentive and Hyperactive). She presented the diagnostic criteria of both types, according to DSM-5, and highlighted the heterogeneity in the presentation of ADHD across different individuals. Dr. Michalopoulou ended her talk by reporting the main causes, the comorbidities and the supporting needs of individuals with ADHD. The second part of the talk, presented by Dr. Klados, focused around the neurobiological correlates of ADHD, highlighting the importance of the frontal cortex, the limbic system and the RAS. Then, Dr. Klados introduced neurofeedback training and explained the benefits of this type of therapy against the conventional pharmacological approaches. The final part of the event constituted of a live neurofeedback session, delivered by Dr. Klados and Mr. Stergiadis. In this session the audience had the chance to observe and try how a real neurofeedback session is being conducted and how an individual is able to actively modulate his/hers brain activity, through an interactive procedure. The event was well-attended by parents, caregivers, educators, professionals, and everyone who was interested in learning more about ADHD. Co-organisers:

Καθηγήτρια Σχολικής Ψυχολογίας Τμήμα Ψυχολογίας, ΑΠΘ Χρήστος Στεργιάδης Διδακτορικός Φοιτητής στις Εφαρμοσμένες Νευροεπιστήμες, Τμήμα Φυσικής, Μηχανικής και Τεχνολογίας, Πανεπιστήμιο του York Δήλωση συμμετοχής Σχετικα με την εκδήλωση Η Διαταραχή Ελλειμματικής Προσοχής και Υπερκινητικότητας (ΔΕΠΥ) είναι μια από τις συχνότερες νευροβιολογικές διαταραχές της παιδικής ηλικίας, η οποία συνεχίζεται, κατά ένα σημαντικό ποσοστό, και στην ενήλικη ζωή. Σκοπός της παρούσας εκδήλωσης είναι να ενημερώσει το ευρύ κοινό γύρω από την ΔΕΠΥ και να δείξει την επίδρασή της στην καθημερινότητα των ατόμων με ΔΕΠΥ και στο οικογενειακό τους περιβάλλον. Θα πραγματοποιηθεί η παρουσίαση μιας πρωτοποριακής και αποτελεσματικής θεραπευτικής μεθόδου για τη ΔΕΠΥ, που ονομάζεται νευροανάδραση. Το κοινό θα έχει την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσει ζωντανά πώς εφαρμόζεται η νευροανάδραση και πώς η μέθοδος αυτή μπορεί να εκπαιδεύσει τον εγκέφαλο ώστε να εξαλείψει τα συμπτώματα της ΔΕΠΥ. Η ευτυχία δεν είναι ένας στόχος για να τον κατακτήσουμε, αλλά μια στάση ζωής που καλλιεργείται καθημερινά και υπάρχει μέσα μας. Η ελπίδα από την άλλη, διαδραματίζει έναν σημαντικό ρόλο στην ζωή του ανθρώπου και είναι κάτι παραπάνω από μια αισιόδοξη άποψη, ότι όλα θα πάνε καλά. Η ελπίδα αλλάζει από άνθρωπο σε άνθρωπο, διότι ο καθένας ελπίζει με διαφορετικό βαθμό. Είναι μια θετική κινητήρια δύναμη η οποία βασίζεται σε μια αίσθηση επιτυχίας, σε στοχοθετημένες ενέργειες και στον σχεδιασμό για την επίτευξη αυτών των στόχων. Υπάρχουν όμως συνταγές για την κατάκτηση της ευτυχίας; Είναι η απόκτηση της ευτυχίας και της ελπίδας ένα άπιαστο όνειρο ή μπορεί να υπάρχει ως μέρος της καθημερινότητας μας; Join and share! Academic staff member and alumna from Psychology department publish academic paper in leading international journal
An academic paper co-authored by Ms. Šeila Redžepagić, an alumnus of our Psychology department, and Dr. Aristea Ladas, Assistant Professor at our Psychology department, was recently published on Substance Use & Misuse, a leading international peer-reviewed journal on research concerning substance use and misuse. The paper "Prospective Memory, Sustained attention and Response Inhibition in Polysubstance Users stable on Methadone Maintenance Treatment." concerns the effects of poly-substance addiction combined with Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) on the cognitive function of prospective memory and the functions modulating it, namely sustained attention and response inhibition. Prospective memory and response inhibition are interrelated constructs, though studied separately in the drug addiction literature. Also, although sustained attention underlies response inhibition, its role in the relation between these functions has been largely neglected. The limited research on the cognitive effects of MMT further stresses the importance of investigating these effects. Therefore, the current study focused on possible effects of MMT combined with long-term drug abuse on all these functions. As predicted, (a) the MMT participants showed impairments in prospective memory, sustained attention and response inhibition and (b) prospective memory, response inhibition and sustained attention are related constructs. The results of this study could inform current rehabilitation and relapse prevention cognitive training practices.

Successful event by CITY College and Y.M.C.A on Violence against Women
An event organised on the occasion of the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ (25 November) On Monday 21 November CITY College, University of York Europe Campus in collaboration with YMCA successfully organised an event on domestic violence on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November). Dr Kalliopi Megari, Lecturer and Programme Lead of postgraduate programme in Clinical Psychology at Psychology Department of CITY College, presented interesting but at the same time particularly worrying statistics and data. Dr. Megari discussed the topic 'Domestic violence and mental health: Data from the international and Greek area' referring first to the different forms of violence, pointing out how important it is to recognise it: “"Domestic violence is any kind of physical, sexual or psychological violent behaviour towards the victim." During her presentation she highlighted that according to the Council of Europe, domestic violence is the main cause of death and disability for women aged 16-44 and causes more deaths than cancer, traffic accidents and war, while she did not fail to mention that children are also victims of violence against women as they usually are exposed to domestic violence. At the closing of the event, Dr. Megari referred to the ways in which violence against women can be dealt with, urging women to speak up and seek help while stressing that there should be zero tolerance for violence. The event concluded a vivid discussion with the audience as Dr. Megari accepted questions and shared her views on the topic. Representatives from CITY College and Y.M.C.A.
