A group of student-volunteers visited the school together with Mr Vassilis Tsoulis, Director of Career, Employability & Enterprise Centre and discussed with the school’s social worker, psychologist and supporting personnel the details of the project. The project will involve supporting children’s with special needs social life and activities. During the meeting, the school staff provided our students with information about the school, its activities and its students and their needs of course. The project presents our students with an invaluable opportunity to get hands on experience from their contact with the children with special needs. Lecturers from our Psychology Department will be guiding our students and providing meaningful feedback during the project. This specific activity is another way in which the Psychology Department and CITY College overall will give back to the community and support those in need putting knowledge into practice. Our Psychology students explore sensation and perception through experiential project
Undergraduate Psychology students of the International Faculty CITY College had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of sensations and the perception of those sensations through an innovative project introduced by Dr Aristea Ladas, in the frame of the unit Sensation & Perception. Working in groups students were asked to select one project, from a list of projects - all related to the taught material - that they had to prepare and present in class in 10 minutes. Students were allowed to use whatever means they considered relevant and appropriate to present their project (e.g. role playing, small experiments in class, hand craft, electronic means etc.). Students were highly motivated, enjoyed the whole process while at they same time experienced their sensations and perception and learnt from their fellow students’ experiences. Through the project they understood how sensation and perception are closely connected and play two different but complimentary roles in how people interpret the world. Sensation refers to the process of sensing our environment through our sensory receptors, while perception is the process with which the brain interprets the sensation. The project enabled students to put this theory into practice and learn by experimenting with their own sensation and perception. Dr Ladas commented “I was amazed by the creativity and professionalism exhibited by the majority of the groups!”

Poster Session for the Research Project of our final year Psychology students
On Friday, 18th January 2019, the final year students of the International Faculty's Psychology Department held a poster session for their Research Projects due to begin soon. The event took place at the reception hall of the Leontos Sofou building at our main campus in Thessaloniki. Led by Dr Aristea Ladas, the poster session aimed at providing students with the opportunity to present their research proposals and receive feedback on their planned study from Psychology Department academic staff, in addition to that received by their supervisors. Additional and diverse feedback is intended to enable students to better design their research. During the event the atmosphere was pleasant, easy-going and communicated to our students that receiving feedback can be both interesting and fun! Simulating a proper conference poster session also gave our students a first-hand experience of how it will be to present their research in conferences, adding to their skills as mental health professionals. We wish to our students best success in the continuation of their projects!

Neuroscience quiz game for our Psychology students
Discovering Neuroscience Psychology while playing Our second year Psychology students had the opportunity to experiment with neurons and get better acquainted with Neuroscience while playing a quiz game during class. Dr Maria Tziraki, Lecturer at our Psychology Department, challenged the students with a neuron quiz game that they played in class in the context of Neuroscience unit. During the first part students were divided in four teams and were asked to construct different types of neurons. Each team was rated from the rest of the teams. Then the three best teams chose a representative that took part in a quiz game. The representatives had to reply to questions posed by pressing a button. If they gave the correct answer, they got one card from the board. The last round was between two teams and the prize of the winning team was marshmallows! Experiential learning is promoted though learning activities inside and outside the classroom, allowing students to engage intellectually, creatively, and emotionally in the learning process and increasing student motivation to apply their knowledge.
