Our Students’ Union (CSU) raises awareness on World AIDS Day
On the World’s AIDS Day our Students’ Union (CSU) successfully organised an activity aiming at raising awareness on AIDS and HIV. The scope of the initiative was to support the cause and disseminate updated information about HIV prevention, it care and its treatment. During the day, information stands were set up in the main campus of the International Faculty, CITY College in Thessaloniki activating the level of our students’ interest. Our CSU made sure to put the message across that protection is the key in stopping the transmission of the disease. Students and staff who visited the stand, picked up their red ribbon to join the cause. HIV information flyers and condoms where also available at the stands. “Our aim was to inform the students on this very important issue, raise awareness, show solidarity and break some of the prejudices around sex, HIV and social stigma. Most of the people believe that AIDS and HIV don't necessarily concern them, yet around half of HIV+ people aren't aware of their status. Moreover, many aren't aware on the difference between HIV and AIDS, and that with an early diagnosis and proper treatment, HIV+ people can maintain the same, normal lifespan. That's why we worked with and promoted Thess Checkpoint as the go-to prevention and information centre, for free, anonymous, rapid HIV testing, and specialized counseling. During the event we handed over more than 700 condoms, together with hundreds of informative flyers and red ribbons”– said Vasilis Kikalos, CSU Welfare & Education Officer. The initiative was exceedingly welcomed by our student. Among others our Students Union (CSU) plans will be particularly focused on welfare oriented activities and events like this one.

15th Students' Spring Symposium
A great event for students by students On 20 May 2016 the CITY College, the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield successfully held for the 15th consecutive year the Students Spring Symposium with great student participation and interesting presentations. This year the Symposium was part of, and run in parallel with, the ‘Young Researchers Days’ event, an event that featured a series of research-related workshops. As always, the Symposium was organised for students by students being one of the major events and traditions of CITY College. With over 90 registrations the 8-hour Symposium took place with bachelors and masters students from all four departments of CITY College participating (it was the first time for the newly established English Studies Department to participate) as well as from Aristotle University and from the University of Sheffield, UK. The International Officer of Sheffield’s Students’ Union, Peggy Lim, visited our Faculty to participate in the Symposium in which she participated with a presentation. All students presented extremely interesting subjects over three sessions. The catchphrase that was established last year for the Symposium, “Have your say, Share your passion”, was reflected in all 15 presentations. In addition to the sessions, this year the Symposium hosted a Round Table discussion about the challenges and issues in doing a PhD, and a trip down memory lane with three alumni students who where part of the Organising Committee in the past. The three alumni, namely Ivo Neskovic, Aristea Ladas, and Nikoalos Tsokanos had travelled to Sheffield with Dr Dimopoulos, Lecturer at our Computer Science Department to present the Students’ Symposium back in 2011. The Symposium concluded with the best three presentations that won a prize from the event’s sponsors. Ali Honaramiz and his amazing presentation about empathy got the first prize of the Symposium. The International Faculty CITY College congratulates all students that organised the Students’ Spring Symposium this year. Special thanks to our sponsors:
