Our Students Union becomes part of the Sheffield Student Union
CSU – SU Twinning On 11 February, after a series of discussions, our Students Union (CSU) became part of the Sheffield Student Union (SU) in the SU Council meeting, where the motion for the twinning of the two Unions was voted. CSU Officer, Vasilis Kikalos, travelled to Sheffield to represent CSU in this meeting. The motion was passed by total majority and CSU is currently working on implementing in detail the spectrum of changes this will bring to the unions’ Constitutions. The initiative for the twinning started by this year’s SU and CSU teams in order to integrate the two bodies in the exemplar of the University of Sheffield and the International Faculty integration. This is a very important development as our students will have steady representation in Sheffield while it will also strengthen the cultural and social relationships between students in both campuses (Thessaloniki and Sheffield). The two Unions are already working on joint initiatives, with the SU being keen to involve the CSU and its students in upcoming events. In a few months, with the completion of the procedural process, the students of both campuses will be considered one body by Sheffield Students’ Union and the CSU will act as a part of the Union. “This kind of integration is challenging and complex, especially considering the size and scale of Sheffield Students’ Union and of its operations. We also believe that it's a very uncommon integration at a British, or even European level. But, we have a common vision and a bigger picture that guides us and undoubtedly, when the integration will mature enough, the benefits will be great for our students and the Sheffield community.” said Vasilis Kikalos while CSU President Theodora Theodoridou commented “I am really happy to see this unique merge taking place. I believe there is so much space for common initiatives and activities. Students at the International Faculty will come closer to students studying at Sheffield and will surely benefit from this integration.” Undoubtedly, the twinning of the two Unions is a very important development for the role of our Union, its strength and the relations of our students with the fellow-students studying at Sheffield, UK.

Successful Summer Schools at the International Faculty in Thessaloniki
Three amazing summer schools, that run in parallel, marked the end of summer 2015 at our main campus in Thessaloniki. Built on the success of the previews years, this year’s summer schools, brought together students from the University of Sheffield, UK, the International Faculty, Greece as well as other countries like Serbia, Kosovo, Armenia, Romania and Bulgaria, creating a truly international dimension. Themed, ‘New Media, New Tech-tools, New Opportunities: from Pinterest to LinkedIn’, ‘Developing an International Employability Profile’ and ‘Cognition and Emotion’ the summer schools included daily classes, excursions to cultural and natural sights, as well as other activities which added a different dynamic to the learning experience. The third summer school was jointly organised by the Psychology Department of the University (UK) and the Psychology Department of the International Faculty (Greece) and was attended only by psychology students studying in two departments. As part of the summer school programme students to relax and spend a day on the sandy beaches of Chalkidiki on an daily excursion organised by the International Faculty. The summer schools concluded with a field trip to Vergina, the internationally famous burial site of the kings of Macedon, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Feedback from students illustrated how the summer schools offer an opportunity to get a taste of studying in Thessaloniki and the International Faculty of the University of Sheffield and get a flavour of the Greek summer while studying a subject of their interest. One student that attended the Summer School said: “I mostly enjoyed the panel interview; it was a unique hands-on experience! I had the opportunity to "compete" with other candidates in fully realistic conditions. Another Summer School milestone was the interview preparation with Dr. Nikolaidis, who shared with us his rich personal experience, which motivated me in a big way!” while another added “I enjoyed the lectures, since they covered interesting topics. I also enjoyed meeting new people with different cultures and backgrounds. But the most wonderful experience for me was the visit to Vergina.” The summer schools at the International Faculty proved to be a truly international, educational and cultural experience to all participating students.
