Ms Laura Neagu, our BAED student embraces volunteerism!
Volunteering offers a unique opportunity to help the others by donating our time or our services for a good cause. What we get back is physical and mental rewards, professional experience, knowledge and the wonderful feeling of giving. We want to "make a difference" and we are happy to see our students following this path. Ms Laura Neagu is our student currently studying for a Bachelor in Business and is actively involved in several volunteering projects. Laura finds time to combine her busy academic schedule with volunteering activities. Lately she organized along with another volunteer, an event on behalf of the Romanian Consulate in Thessaloniki. The activity was part of a bigger project organized by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, called «La Grèce vous invite» (Greece invites you). Laura was also part of the promotion team of the contemporary Romanian film "Ana" which premiered last month. Laura is an excellent example of a student who is engaged in extra curriculum activities involving with volunteerism! Well done!

Big Congratulations to our students for crossing the 42km Marathon's finish line!
Nikolaos Mantsios, Haris Liampas and Stelios Karatzas completed yesterday the 9th International Marathon “Alexander the Great”. They all raced the marathon for the first time. Stelios completed the race in 4 hours 3 minutes while Nikos and Haris have run it side by side in 5 hours 8 minutes. Anybody who deals with sports and long distance races knows that the marathon is one of the most challenging sports. Stelios mentioned modestly that the race was not so difficult as everybody says about the 42km as he regularly runs for training 10-15 km. His decision to run the marathon was made recently and crossing the line made him feel proud of himself for achieving one more challenging goal. Haris says : “I dedicate this Μarathon race to Nikolaos Mantios with whom I was with at the whole duration of the race and we crossed the finish line side by side, I believe that if he was not with me in the whole distance I would not have made it. Also I devote this race to my friends and family that waited for me in the finish line to offer me help, and to all those that believed in me and sent me positive energy.” Nikos was more laconic after a brief conversation we had with him. He said “My goal was to complete this race, l might never run it again but the feeling of finishing this race was enough, plus fulfilling a goal l had since two years ago made me feel proud of myself.” Here we have to mention that Nikos injured his knee during the race therefore he continued to the finish line. We wish him a fast recovering and lots of strength to achieve his future targets. Once again congratulations to the three of them. We are all very proud of you and we wish you from our hearts to continue running both for your personal body and spiritual balance and for any other cause that satisfies you. Two more students will run the Marathon
Two more students dare to run the 42km of the 9th International Alexander the Great Marathon! Stelios Karatzas and Haris Liampas run for the first time this distance, they are not professional long-distance runners, therefore their attempt is highly appreciated and valued! Stelios and Haris registered their participation through Desmos.org, the non profit philanthropic organization. Haris Liampas is from Kozani, on his 3rd year at the BSc in Psychology. He tests his limits through running, every time trying to run further and further since each extra mile helps him to uncover parts of himself and his place in the universe. It's his first attempt to cover the full distance of a marathon! Stelios Karatzas is Greek-Canadian currently studying the MA in Marketing, Advertising and PR programme. He never ran a marathon and says that he things it is going to be fun! We wish them much strength and stamina! Go Stelios and Haris! You have our full support!

I mean pitching potential investors about your passion and goals and trying to convince them in 10 minutes that your business venture is worth financing.” Talking about his business venture and the business plan he presented at the event Mr. Vourgas said: “For the last 12 months I have been running my own business, exporting some of the finest Greek products, mainly from my home Evia. Through my company, Greek Golden Groves, and along with my team we try hard to promote the Mediterranean way of living in foreign markets, by using a specific branding strategy for each of our products. My business plan is to expand the existing G3foods company in a newpioneering platform with vertically integrated production control. In a few words, my business idea is about the modernization of our existing olive oil press and the creation of new state-of-the-art packaging facility, worth visiting. Through this facility we aim to offer to producers the opportunity to acquire the added value that is missing from their products.” Jorgo Gellci, BSc in Computer Science graduate currently attending the MSc in Software Engineering and Telecommunications, Kushtrim Fetahu BSc in Computer Science graduate currently attending the MA in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations, Lorik Mulaademi, BSc in Computer Science graduate from our Faculty how also completed his postgraduate studies in innovation and technology management in University of Bath, UK and Marius Shehati, also BSc in Computer Science graduate and a professional software developer presented as a group their idea about the creation of a digital community dedicated to nightlife and clubbing. The all spoke with enthousiasm about their experience with SEVE’s competition: “As a graduate and student of Computer Science, my experience in business and investments is somehow limited. The presentation of the idea on 20 and 21 November was a great experience. We had the opportunity to talk with real businessmen, willing to invest, one of which showed a great interest in our business plan. SEVE’s competition was and continues to be a great experience in this aspect, as it provided us with the opportunity to talk about real life business idea with businessmen and investors who were willing to collaborate with us. I really hope that the contacts we made will prove to be successful collaborations in the future” Jorgo said while Lorik added: “We have had this idea for a couple of months now and the only part missing was somebody who could provide the necessary funding to get the project running. So SEVE’s next generation competition was the perfect opportunity for us.” When asked about the competition Kushtrim said: “The competition prepared us for future contacts with prospective investors. We got valuable insights of the investors’ world and what they are looking for in different projects.” In his turn Marius added “We are all very excited about our business idea and we hope and believe that this collaboration will continue beyond the two days of the SEVE competition.”

Students from the International Faculty participate in the Panhellenic and Balkan Informatics Conferences in Thessaloniki
The contribution of our students to the 17th Panhellenic Conference in Informatics (17th PCI) and the 6th Balkan Conference of Informatics (6th BCI) was indisputable. PCI and BCI were held in Thessaloniki on 19-21 September with 120 participants. Distinguished keynote speakers were invited, namely, Prof. Sifakis, Prof. Kasabov and Prof. Loukopoulos. The International Faculty and SEERC were co-organisers in collaboration with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia, the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki and the Greek Computer Society. Professor Ketikidis was one of the Conference Chairs while Professor Kefalas and Dr George Eleftherakis were among the chairs of the Programme Committee. The events hosted three paper presentations from the Computer Science Department and another three members of staff chaired few sessions. Most important of all was the contribution of our students from all Departments who volunteered to help the conference participants in many different ways. It was a great experience for all of them and an opportunity to acquire invaluable experience of the fine grain details of the organisation of such events.
