Annual MBA Study Week in Thessaloniki 2013
More than 120 2nd Year Executive MBA students from across the South-East and Eastern Europe, attended the Annual Study Week at the main campus of the University of Sheffield International Faculty in Thessaloniki that this year took place 5-12 April 2013. During the joint classes of the study week students from all countries (Greece, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine and Turkey) attended the specialisation units of the MBA track they have chosen. The study week is a unique opportunity for Executive MBA students to join the Faculty’s international network, attend modules of the MBA programme and participate in a number of seminars and social events. In the frame of this year’s study week a very interesting seminar on ‘Career Coaching’ was presented by Mr. Nikos Lambridis, Chief Executive Officer at Advisor Coaching and Training, who shared his expertise on career-related issues. MBA students had also the opportunity to attend the annual Strategic Peoples Management Workshop that this year coincided with the study week. Participants found the topic of the workshop, ‘Taking the ‘i’ out of crisis: Leadership and Learning’ very timely interesting and speakers’ presentations particularly insightful. On the occasion of the weekly visit in Thessaloniki MBA students went sightseeing around the city and organised short trips to some of Thessaloniki’s beautiful surroundings like Chalkidiki with its sandy beaches, Mount Olympus and the archaeological site of Vergina. Students were impressed by enchanting Thessaloniki and the places they visited. The International Faculty also organized a ‘beer party’ to welcome all students to this unique MBA gathering. Also, before leaving Thessaloniki, our students didn’t miss out on the opportunity to spend typical Greek ‘bouzoukia’ night. Classes, seminars, fun, networking: the Study Week in Thessaloniki had a bit of everything and everyone left very content with this unique study experience offered by the programme. Seminar on 'Education and Technology' by Mr Hatziapostolou at Noesis
Mr. Thanos Hatziapostolou, Senior Lecturer at our Computer Science Department, delivered a very interesting seminar entitled ‘Technology and Education’ that took place at NOESIS Technology Museum in Thessaloniki, 22 April 2013. In his presentation, Mr. Hatziapostolou presented a series of web tools that teachers can use to adapt new technology in the classroom in order to facilitate their work, increase student motivation and participation - since traditional teaching often cultivates a passive role -, receive better feedback, train students to use technology and improve the overall educational process. The speaker explained the use of each tool and their advantages to both the students and the teachers. The demos of some of the tools required the audience’s participation with the use of their smartphones. The outcome was quite impressive. When asked, Mr. Hatziapostolou commented: “If teachers are willing to be trained and embrace technology in their classes, students of every age are sure to benefit from the many tools and skills technology can offer. However technology should complement the traditional educational methods and not overwhelm the educational process”. The seminar was addressed to teachers of different levels of education and concluded with a vivid Q&A session.

Our Psychology Department becomes Organisational Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
We are happy to announce that our Psychology Department recently became ‘Organisational Member’ of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). BACP is currently the largest UK (over 37,000 members) professional body representing counselling and psychotherapy. This is another official demonstration that our Psychology Department is dedicated to practicing responsibly, ethically and to the highest of standards not only academically, but professionally too. Graduates of our postgraduate programmes in Counselling Psychology will have one more advantage as counsellors in their professional field, since they will have graduated from a Psychology Department that was organisational member of BACP. Dr. Suzie Savvidou , Academic Director of the postgraduate programmes in Counselling Psychology commented: “This membership is a very good development for our counselling students and graduates. The role of counselling becomes extremely important nowadays for everyone’s well being, and our graduates need to be distinguished among the so many counsellors and psychotherapists, with the status they deserve. Holding a degree from Sheffield University, in a Department which is an organizational member of BACP brings them closer to this achievement.” More info about BACP www.bacp.co.uk

Knowledge Volunteers at CITY College – Round 2
Student-teachers teach computer skills to over 50 years old students A second ‘Knowledge Volunteers’ project is in progress for academic year 2012-13 at the International Faculty. Over 50 years old students meet teenager teachers to learn basic computer skills in the frame of the ‘Knowledge Volunteers’ project undertaken by the University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College, in collaboration with the organisation ‘50+ Hellas’. Following the success of the first ‘Knowledge Volunteers (TKV)’ programme completed by the International Faculty, CITY College, in November 2012 the programme now continues with a new cycle of classes with new and returning students and teachers. On the 25th of February 2013, two new groups of The Knowledge Volunteers (TKV) project began classes at the main campus of the University of Sheffield International Faculty in Thessaloniki. In this context, high-school and college students teach students over 50 years old basic computer skills on one-on-one basis. Students who successfully completed the first cycle of the programme, as well as new mature students, now continue with the “advanced group” of the Knowledge Volunteers who are introduced to the digital world of Social Networking, such as Facebook and YouTube. The beginner group runs in parallel with new students who are taught among other basic computer skills, how to navigate the Internet and how to manage an email account. The project aims are two-folded: to educate older and digitally illiterate individuals on basic skills for computers, and to promote intergenerational learning and volunteering. This way, many older individuals are provided with valuable tools to avoid social exclusion from a contemporary society that relies growingly in digital means to communicate. Mr. George Pavlidis, the programme coordinator and PhD Candidate in Gerontology at our research centre SEERC says: “I am happy that we manager to run a second cycle of ‘Knowledge Volunteers’, proving that there is a mutual interest from older and young people for knowledge and intergenerational cooperation. The programme aims at promoting active ageing and active youth at the same time. It’s a very interesting blend of roles and I believe that the outcome is a win-win case for both sides involved. The programme definitely gives a different dimension to education.” The TKV is a European funded project, in the framework of the Grundvig - Lifelong Learning Program.
