BAED participates in 'Strategica International Conference' in Bucharest
Lecturers and postgraduate students from our Business Administration & Economics Department (BAED) participated in the first edition of the Strategica International Academic Conference that took place in Bucharest, Romania, representing the International Faculty. The event took place at the National University of Political and Administrative Studies, June 27-28, 2013.

HR Seminar by Dr. Leslie Szamosi in Sofia
At times of crisis when the majority of companies focus on downsizing, investing in talent management becomes even more important for businesses’ performance and success. This was the topic discussed by Dr. Leslie Szamosi, Academic Director of the Executive MBA programme, in the HR seminar he delivered in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event took place on 11th of June at the Kempinski Hotel Zografski.

The Innovation Challenge 2013 Competition
The competition ‘Innovation Challenge 2013’ was officially launched in Sofia on the 13th of June 2013 with a special event that was opened with a business seminar by Mr. Stelios Kehaghias, Senior Lecturer at our Business Administration and Economics Department, themed “Innovate or Die”. Seminar on Hotel and Hospitality Industry by Dr. Dimitrios Nikolaidis for our postgraduate students in Bucharest
On 27th May 2013 Dr Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department, delivered an interesting seminar entitled ‘The Hotel and Hospitality Industry: A need for new direction; A need for new philosophy’ at the partner institute of the International Faculty in Bucharest, the SNSPA University. Dr Nikolaidis focused his presentation on contemporary issues in hotel industry, emphasising how customer satisfaction can build strong customer relationships. He pointed out that strong customer relationships combined with innovative service management is a valuable competitive advantage for any company in this industry. The need for a new philosophy and new direction is vital for companies that wish to stand out according to Dr Nikolaidis. The event was well-attended by more than 60 students. The seminar took place in the frame of University of Sheffield programmes offered by the International Faculty in Bucharest.

Guest lecture on Successful Event Organisation
An interesting guest lecture entitled “Steps to success-effective event organization” was delivered by Ms. Monika Nagy, Information Officer at Enterprise Europe Network, on 21st of May 2013. The lecture was addressed to the postgraduate students of the MA in Marketing, Advertising and PR and the MSc in Leisure & Tourism Management programmes. The students benefited from the key practical insights and the local and international examples provided by Ms. Nagy. In her presentation Ms. Nagy answered the question of what makes an event successful and how marketing tools can be used in the best way in order to have effective results.She also underpinned the importance of targeting the right audience which can significantly improve an event’s success. The seminar was delivered as part of the Festivals and Events Management unit and is in line with the International Faculty’s aim to bring academia and industry closer. The seminar was sponsored by the Federal of Industries of Northern Greece (FING) and the Enterprise Europe Network.

BAED students visit Hyatt Regency Hotel in Thessaloniki
A company visit to Thessaloniki Hyatt Regency Hotel took place on Monday 13th May for our 3rd level business students of the management track. Mr. Serafini Giovanni, Human Resources Manager at Hyatt welcomed the students and while giving them a tour of the hotel facilities, he explained interesting issues related to human resources in the hotel industry. The students gained valuable knowledge and experiences and realised the importance of offering a luxurious five-star hotel experience to customers while wandering around the luxurious facilities of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The students enjoyed this visit and the opportunity to get insight from one of the leading hotels in the region of Northern Greece.

Guest lecture by Dr. Nikolaidis on Service Development
A very interesting guest lecture entitled ‘Developing your Service — Time to Reassess, Time to Differentiate’ was delivered by Dr. Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of Business Administration and Economics Department. The lecture was addressed to 2nd year Greek stream business students and took place on 23 April in the context of the unit ‘Principles of Marketing’. In his presentation Dr. Nikolaidis underpinned the importance of services and the necessity for today’s businesses to reassess their services strategy, upgrade their services standards and differentiate themselves from competitors by increasing customer satisfaction. Students enjoyed the guest lecture that ended with an open discussion with the lecturer.

Training workshops for Fibank and EAGLE Mobile by Dr. Nikolaidis in Tirana
On 9 of May 2013 Dr. Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of our Business Administration & Economics Department (BAED) delivered two training workshops to groups of executives at two major companies of Tirana, Fibank (Financial Investment Bank) and EAGLE Mobile. The 2-hour workshop themed ‘From Customer Satisfaction to Customer Loyalty: From Theory to Practice’ focused on the concept of service quality and its influence to customer satisfaction and retention and touched upon a series of related issues such as the marketing service triangle, factors that influence customer satisfaction, the new era of marketing services and the importance of customers. Dr. Nikolaidis enhanced his presentation with real cases and examples that participants found particularly useful. The executive groups that attended the workshops from Fibank and EAGLE Mobile were representatives from the companies’ marketing department, customer relations, HR department, sales and technical support. All participants found the workshop very interesting and educative and thanked Dr. Nikolaidis for his lively presentation.

Seminar on ‘Developing New Products as growth strategy’ by Dr Nikolaidis in Tirana
Dr. Dimitrios Nikolaidis, Head of the Business Administration and Economics Department and Senior Lecturer in Marketing Communications delivered a very successful seminar on New Product Development (NPD) in Tirana on 9 May 2013 at the premises of the International Faculty’s partner institute in Albania, The American University of Tirana (UAT). Dr. Nikolaidis focused his presentation on how new product and service development can prove a very successful growth strategy for businesses even in times of crisis. He presented the whole process of NPD: from idea generation, to market research, to the design production of the product and final evaluation. Dr. Nikolaidis noted that this strategy requires a strong understanding of the existing market and also require pairing the right strategy to product growth objectives. He also mentioned that such an investment usually involves a level of risk but, if businesses work methodically, it generates substantial profits. The event more than 100 participants coming from the fields of business, industry and academia, who found Dr Nikolaidis’ presentation particularly interesting. The seminar took place in the frame of the University of Sheffield postgraduate programmes delivered in Tirana by the University’s International Faculty, CITY College.

Company visit at Polis Convention Centre in Thessaloniki
Our Business Administration & Economics Department first year bachelors students organised a company visit at ‘Polis Convention Centre’, 23 April 2013. The students, escorted by Mr. Stelios Kehaghias , Senior Lecturer at the Department, were given a short tour of premises of ‘Polis’. The centre’s representative talked to the students about the centre’s philosophy, aims and marketing strategy. The students were impressed by the facilities of Polis and found the information on the way the centre operates very interesting. Polis Convention Centre is a luxurious centre located in the outskirts of Thessaloniki and hosts conferences, as well as social events. Company visits take place during each academic year and aim at bringing students closer to the real-life business world.

BAED students visit NOESIS Museum in Thessaloniki
On Wednesday 20th March 2013 a group of postgraduate students from the Business Administration and Economic Department (BAED) made a field trip to NOESIS, the Science Center and Technology Museum in Thessaloniki. The visit took place as additional activity of the “Festivals and Events Management” module. Accompanied by the module leader, Dr Ana Cruz , the students met Dr. Tanya Kiriakidou, project manager for radio Awards at Noesis who shared insights into the organization of the Radio Awards in Greece. Radio Awards is a contest organized by Noesis aiming at honoring the best radio station and presenter in Greece and Cyprus. Students contributed creative ideas that are considered to be implemented in next year's Awards. They also enjoyed the interactive exhibitions, the planetarium and a very thrilling ride in the simulator! The students enjoyed this field trip experience and had the opportunity to get first-hand information about the organization of the radio awards. The International Faculty is always happy to give its students the opportunity to visit organizations and take a glimpse on real life business environments.
